What safety equipment is required on board a sailing yacht?

It is good practice to have safety equipment on board your sailing yacht. The following list of
safety equipment should be considered before you set sail:

● Lifejackets - one for each passenger on board, including children
● Horseshoe buoy
● Lifebuoy
● Rope cutter
● VHF Radio
● Radar reflector
● First Aid Kit
● Fire Extinguishers
● Navigation lights
● Signalling devices such as flares, whistles, or torches can also be considered

A liferaft can also be carried onboard, however, The RYA states that “it is not mandatory for
private pleasure craft under 13.7 metres in length to carry a liferaft”.

Regular maintenance checks should also be carried out on all safety equipment to ensure it
is in good working order.
